20 kitchen and bathroom style ideas

Giving your kitchen or bathroom a designer look is not as difficult as you might think.

KITCHEN:

1. To freshen up your kitchen, think modern. "The main change architecturally is that kitchens are mainly straight lines - curves and arches are out," said Fred Flynn from All Kitchen Transformations.

2. Key to the modern look is getting your cabinetry right. "Go for cabinets that have no handles but push to open," said interior designer Julie-Ann Hind, of the Decorating Forum. "Use cabinet doors that have a flat profile and a gloss finish."

3. Hampton's style is the other hot look in kitchens, according to Ms Hind. To get the look, choose cabinetry with a Shaker profile and traditional-style handles, industrial-style pendant lights over the island bench and displays of natural elements such as baskets, pot plants and fruit.

4. Have a tight budget? Consider using that staple of affordable furniture, the flat pack. "Using flat-pack-type kitchens is taking off and it saves money," said Tim Roberts from kitchen and bathroom renovation company Select Solutions.

5. Get smart with your storage. Mr Flynn recommended using space-saving corner units to open up dead space, opting for drawers over cupboards and using soft-touch drawer runners and door hinges, such as those made by Hettich.

6. Including lighting at floor level or in drop bulkhead ceilings added another dimension to your kitchen, said renovation expert Sasha de Bretton-Gordon, of Million Dollar Makeovers. Lighting under overhead cupboards or breakfast bars also looks great.

7. Invest in a quality benchtop, such as natural granite or a manufactured stone like CaesarStone. "It will give you a designer look and future-proof your kitchen by making your main work area durable enough to withstand everyday use," advised Lincoln Trager, of kitchen design company The Maker Designer Kitchens.

8. Try a feature splashback. Mr Roberts recommended Zenolite as an alternative to glass, Ms Hind said smoked grey mirrored splashbacks gave a sophisticated feel and Ms de Bretton-Gordon said that Perspex or Laminex Metaline splashbacks could be laid straight on top of old tiles.

9. Opt for integrated appliances, Mr Trager suggested. "They are key to giving your kitchen a seamless look, making it understated and elegant while still being stylish."

10. Feature laminates can give your kitchen a new lease on life. "Use a feature laminate in a gloss or wood-grain look on breakfast bars and down a row of drawers or pot drawers," Ms de Bretton-Gordon said.

You should keep in mind that it must be safe and easy to clean and also friendly and comfortable. Choose colors that your child likes but with an adult touch in case you have guests or older children come to visit.

If your child has a specific preference when it comes to colors you should listen to him if he doesn’t have knowledge of what he wants or doesn’t want you should the color you think is best. The most popular preferences toddlers have are of a favorite character, fish, flowers, ducks, ships and spring garden. If what she wants it’s too much make her choose certain details.

According to your theme you have to pick a color for the walls. You should pick a single color that goes with the objects you are going to add later. Bright colors or light ones are perfect and your toddler will certainly like it.

The next thing you have to add in order to complete the theme is to choose a shower curtain. A curtain with a happy patter will do the trick but keep in mind that it should be see-through in order to be able to keep an eye on your kid.

Towels should be next on your list. Choose them in colors that mach the theme of the bathroom . If you want them to be special you can add the name of your toddler on the towels. Don’t forget to put some extra towels under the sink in case she runs out.

For the front of the tub use a bath mat which does not slip, with a non-skid back in the shape of a flower or whatever fits the theme. All in all choose a plain color to complete the design.

Add some photos on the bathroom walls such as boats, light houses, hooks which will look good if you have chosen a nautical theme.

For the accessories which go in front of the mirror you should choose the safest objects and at the same time which go with the theme. The accessories that you should have are: a cup, garbage can, soap dispenser, non-slip bath decals and a toothbrush holder and a stepping stool.

To sum up you should enjoy yourself while you do this project and don’t forget to involve your toddler too. Just follow this simple steps and you bathroom will look divine and will be the talk of all parents that come and visit.
