Youth disability summit to be held in Dumfries
Youth disability summit to be held in DumfriesJun 22 2011 by Kieran Westbrook, Dumfries Standard Wednesday
A HOLYWOOD teenager with cerebral palsy will be the master of ceremonies at a youth disability summit taking place in Dumfries.
Callum Dirom, 18, has been living with the condition all his life and has witnessed first hand the problems associated with disability.
And he hopes this summit, which is geared towards youth disability, will help remove those hurdles.
He told the Standard: “This is a chance for young disabled people to tell senior figures what problems they have and what they need to be put in place. It’s a great opportunity and I hope a lot of people take part.”
Callum has lived with cerebral palsy all his life and he knows the barriers it can create.
He said: “Having a disability can make finding a job much harder. I can’t walk long distances which doesn’t help. But sometimes you feel that people just see you coming and make up their mind about you.
“It can also make socialising difficult. I am a very sociable person and I enjoy being around people, but having a disability can make that harder too.”
The Youth Matters summit is being run by DG Voice and will see disabled people, carers and top decision-makers from Dumfries and Galloway attending the DG One event. Tam Bailley Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People is the keynote speaker. Band Cree Sound will also perform and there will also be workshops taking place. More information can be found by contacting DG Voice on 01387 257770 or emailing info@dgvoice.co.uk. The event takes place on Friday.
