Shelley Ambrose on launching The Walrus Laugh
Not only is humour one of Canada’s most successul exports, but The Walrus Laughs is sponsored by Stella Artois, which makes Canada Day the perfect time to launch the site says Ambrose.
“Canada Day is sort of – it’s a beer holiday,” she says, adding that the first Walrus Laughs event will be held next May. “We’re having the event next year on May 2-4. … This is The Walrus has standards, Ambrose says. They aren’t trying to dictate one kind of humour, she says, but they don’t want to publish anything offensive. And although the site will feature video alongside art and illustrations, this is not a vehicle for stand-up.
“It’s about the writing,” she says. “So we have a clip of Gordon Pinsent reading his piece.”
Ambrose is hoping that by soliciting content from the public, the site will lead to the discovery of some new comedic talents, because it’s first goal, she says, it to entertain.
“I hope it’s going to be … the place where people can go over and over and over again and find something new to laugh at.
