Area police department offers free summer kits
PEPPER PIKE-- With the increase in traffic flow over the summer months, Cuyahoga County police departments are encouraging motorists to get proactive and make buckling up a priority.
The Cuyahoga County Safe Communities Coalition, in partnership with State Farm Insurance, will be distributing Safe Summer Travel kits. The items in these kits will serve as a reminder that summer travel can be fun when paired with safe travel practices such as buckling up, checking to make sure your vehicle is ready for the road and planning your route ahead of time.
The kit contains free gear that make a car ride more enjoyable. The kit contains sensible items such as a tire gauge, road atlas, accident report guides and seat belt trip sheets. There are also more fun items such as a $5 gas gift card, children’s activity book and crayons and a gift certificate to Chick-fil-A.
These kits are being distributed in support of national Click It or Ticket campaign.
“An important thing to remember is buckling up really does save lives,” said Pepper Pike Police Sgt. Michael Cannon.
Cannon said the initiative is about saving lives by getting more drivers and passengers to buckle up regularly. He said buckling up is the single most effective thing a motorist can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash.
According to police, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passengers by 45 percent, and by 60 percent in pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans.
Further, statistics show seat belts increase the odds of survival in a rollover crash in a light truck by nearly 80 percent.
The Safe Summer Travel Kits are available at local police departments while supplies last.
