Recent news from Lake George is food for thought for who live on, and use Owasco Lake for swimming, boating and fishing.It all has to do with an infestation in Lake George of Asian clams, which are about the size of a quarter, with ridges and an olive green color. They release phosphorus and nitrogen which can result in blue green algae blooms, which can cause rashes on humans who go into the water. They can also foul and clog up water intake pipes.
This week, the Lake George Asian Clam Rapid Response Task Force issued a news release noting “over 800, 7-foot by 50-foot PVC mats have been installed and weighted down with 25,000 pieces of rebar in Lake George in an effort to kill the invasive species Asian Clam (Corbicula fluminea).”
The release noted the $400,000 project, which covers a six-acre area, started in difficult and frigid working conditions soon after ice out in mid-April. Divers worked four weeks to install the mats. All the mats were installed before the water temperatures reached 59 degrees, the temperature at which the clams are able to reproduce.
“The intent of the mats is to smother and kill the clams by cutting off their oxygen supplies,” the release said.
This invasive species was discovered last fall in Owasco Lake’s northern end.
Earlier this year, a special task force was formed in Cayuga County to address their local presence.
“We are asking lakeshore residents to see if Asian clam shells are washed up on their lakefront area and asking them to rake the sediment near and just below the waterline to see if they can find live Asian clams,” according to the Cayuga County Water Quality Management Agency Web site.
“If a clam is found in Owasco Lake that matches the description of the Asian clam, citizens are asked to photograph it,” the Web site said. Afterward, call Jessica Reinhart, the Owasco Lake water inspector at 252-4171 ext. 120 or email her at jreinhart@cayugaswcd.org.
If these clams are discovered in a waterway other than Owasco Lake, the Management Agency is asking persons to contact Amy Barra at Cayuga County Cornell Cooperative Extension at 255-1183.
Barra said free workshops are being planned for later this summer to help educate residents on how to identify Asian clams.
“They look similar to fingernail clams, which are native," she said.
