$6 million hotel planned for Elyria « The Chronicle-Telegram ...

Holiday Inn — and the Ohio Turnpike on a now-grassy 6 acre plot of land off Midway Mall Boulevard. It will include an indoor pool, spa and fitness center and conference room.

A completion date is slated for December 2012.

The deal to bring the project to Elyria is more than 90 percent complete and has city officials excited about it as a sign commercial growth is coming back to the city.

“This land was originally purchased in 2008, but the developers could not receive financing due to the national economy,” said Deputy Safety Service Director Kevin Brubaker, who also handles economic development for the city. “This is a major project for the city. We are optimistic. The developer is excited about the project and believes the city is ripe for another hotel.”

Raj Chandat, of Sunrise Hospitality Inc., the development company building the hotel, did not return calls seeking comment Thursday.

On Monday, City Council’s Community Development and Finance Committees will hear for the first time details of a tax incentive being offered to Sunrise Hospitality Inc. If approved, it will give the development company a 15-year, 100 percent property tax abatement. Currently, the agreement does not have a job requirement as a stipulation, but Brubaker said Council has the authority to add one before voting on the agreement.

However, Brubaker said Sunrise Hospitality has said 25 to 30 jobs will be added once the hotel opens with an annual payroll of more than $300,000.

The city gets a small percentage of the hotel room tax, but most of that revenue goes to the county.

Councilman Tom Callahan, D-at large, the head of the Council’s Community Development Committee, said no action will be taken Monday to give Council members time to look over the agreement and ask questions. In addition, the city must give the local schools an opportunity of 45 days to raise any concerns or objections to the tax abatement.
