North Jersey residents set to hit the road for July 4 weekend
"I'm planning on traveling to Philadelphia on the Megabus," said Perry, who will be joined by two girlfriends as she journeys to the birthplace of the nation's Declaration of Independence. "You can travel round-trip for $18," said Perry, who was laid off from her hospital job a year ago.
Once there, they plan to stay with friends and tour sites that include the Franklin Institute, she said.
The number of New Jerseyans expected to travel this holiday has dropped 3 percent compared with last July 4, according to AAA New Jersey Automobile Club. And the economy – gas prices in particular – plays no small role.
"Gas prices are still approximately a dollar higher than last year," said Cathleen Lewis, spokeswoman for the Florham Park-based auto club. It is "a factor in the decline of Fourth of July travelers."
"Increased fuel costs are also causing a shift in the demographics of the typical Fourth of July traveler, as higher prices at the pump impact lower-income households more significantly," she said.
* The percentage of travelers with a household income of $50,000 or less is expected to decrease from 41 percent to 33 percent, while travelers with a household income of more than $100,000 are expected to increase from 26 percent to 35 percent, she said.
* Overall, AAA projects 1.2 million New Jerseyans will travel at least 50 miles from home for the holiday. Of those, AAA estimates just over 1 million will go by automobile — about the same as in 2010.
* The New Jersey Turnpike Authority projects a higher number of motorists will hit both toll roads this year compared with last. During the seven-day period ending July 6, the toll roads agency anticipates 4,637,500 drivers will use the turnpike to get to or from their destinations, compared with 4,588,462 a year ago.
* Between today and Monday, about 2.4 million motorists are expected to use the turnpike; 5.2 million motorists are expected to use the parkway.
* The New Jersey Department of Transportation will suspend construction projects between 6 a.m. today and noon on Tuesday, said Joe Dee, spokesman for the department.
* About 84,577 New Jerseyans will go by plane, down nearly 17 percent compared with 2010's Independence Day travel figures, according to AAA.
* Officials at the Port Authority expect more than 4.5 million travelers at airports, bridges, tunnels, terminals and PATH rapid-transit system this weekend. That includes nearly 640,000 passing through Newark Liberty International Airport.
