Movie profiles '60s singer Phil Ochs
"God help the troubadour who tries to be a star," Phil Ochs warned in his song "Chords of Fame."
The lines echo with bitter irony. Ochs' personal celebrity peaked in the 1960s as a "protest singer, though he disliked that label. His songs included "Small Circle of Friends" and the anti-war anthem "I Ain't Marchin' Anymore." His fame dissipated extensively by the time he hanged himself in 1976 at age 35.
New York film director Kenneth Bowser hopes to raise that profile again with "Phil Ochs: There But for Fortune," a documentary released last winter, which will be screened 2 p.m. Sunday at the Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives, 3101 Clifton Ave., Clifton.
The event is the project of Cincinnati freelance writer Steven Rosen.
"I was kind of waiting for it to come here, then when it was clear it wasn't coming, I decided to do this," Rosen said.
The movie includes interviews with the likes of actor Sean Penn and musicians Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul and Mary) and Billy Bragg.
"He represented something political about the '60s but also much more than it," Rosen said. "He's just one of those people like Harry Nilsson who accomplished so much but didn't get his due one way or another."

The Reaction: Phil Ochs - protest singer for his time and ours
Not to crap on Dylan because I really do love his music, but many of his tunes we typically think of as protest songs are oblique enough to appeal to a wider audience and don't always perhaps name the injustice so boldly, which can serve to make a wider audience more comfortable with what he is saying. I know it's not that cut and dried, but as a rule protest songs tend to be a little more ham-fisted and Dylan was/is more "artistic" than that.
