Thinking Inside the (Window)box

For a summer morning, there's nothing like a walk around the property to inspect the gardens. What? No estate? You can get the same thrill of wonder and satisfaction by opening your window and look closely at plants in your Windowbox. In fact, take a look close up at this small piece of land can be even more exciting because you see all the details of what is happening.

Our across the river-daughter was growing Sun Gold cherry tomatoes in a box of earth on his porch Triple Decker for years. The first thing every morning, is there checking on the plants. At the beginning she was amazed at how much happens to a vigorously growing plant each day — the way the branches muscle their way up and out, the appearance of blossoms! And then the fruit setting on. She said with the responsibilities of caring for the plants — and the pleasure of seeing what new thing it would do each day — it was the closest she has come to having a pet.

JP container gardener Fran Price grows tomatoes and basil in the courtyard of her condo complex. "When you live in the city, you have to make an effort to connect with the Earth, to grow something," she said. "What is better than tomatoes? And the basil to go with them."

Marc Grossman gets equal pleasure out of his windowbox of red geraniums. They are very little trouble — not needing frequent watering or fertilizing — and he says it makes him feel good every time he catches sight of their bright salute outside his sunny window.  There are varieties of pink geraniums and white ones, but the only ones Marc will grow are the blazing red ones.  

For some people, a windowbox is a place for flowers. Period. But increasing numbers of city gardeners are using their windowboxes for herbs and vegetables, either on their own or combined with flowers.

Having fresh basil, parsley, or mint, right outside your window (or in pots on the inside windowsill) often provides you with just the amount of flavor you need in the salad or soup or glass of iced tea you are making. And sometimes a handful of arugula leaves from your windowbox is all you need to give your salad zip! 

(You can get little pots of herbs at a nursery right now and enjoy them in a container until the cold sets in. Yes, I know that is expensive, but then you have them all season to use a little bit at a time, and have you noticed how expensive one bunch of herbs is at the supermarket or farmer's market? And how some of it always goes bad before you use it all up — even though you are using that old trick of storing the herbs in a closed plastic bag with a slightly damp paper towel?

“Ahh! Not again!!” Yelled the Admin team’s Manager…

And he goes on…

“Are you all little kids? Who is breaking these AC Switches daily? If you are not going to tell, then we are installing security cameras soon. Then we will see who breaks this stuff…”

We look at each other puzzled – someone from ourselves is breaking this switch… But who?

Don’t worry mates – Super Tester is here for your rescue!! He will find it and punish the offender (Grrrr!!)

Puzzled?? I will explain…

Hope you all are aware of the temperature control switches for the centralized air conditioners. In our office, we had our centralized AC’s controls hanging from the wall. So people changed the temperature at will – when they felt it was too cold or too hot As a result the switches began to malfunction and our Admin team had to replace them. Also they instructed the security people to operate these switches and locked them up in a small plastic box. Now, if the employees want to change the temperature, they must call the security guys to open this box and change the temperature In addition, they stuck these plastic boxes to the wall with an adhesive tape, to look more aesthetic…

And these small plastic boxes are causing the yelling now a days Everyday the Admin team finds 2 of these boxes stripped from the wall and hanging inconveniently. They will fix it again and the next day, the same thing happens… No wonder the manager becomes mad at these…

So, from the day our Admin manager started to yell, I paid close attention to what is happening with these boxes. But it is sort of an intermittent issue and I cannot always keep on looking at these switches.. I somewhat forgot about this problem, even though the yelling and complaining continued

We usually have our video conference with onsite colleagues weekly. I forgot about this meeting once and went for lunch. I remembered about the meeting when my friend called me on her way to the meeting room. So I finished my lunch quickly and ran for the meeting room. I remember my shoulder stuck something, but since I was running to catch up, I didn’t really care about what I broke. While returning from the meeting room, I noticed that the switch box is broken!!! Oh my god! I broke it this time, rather unknowingly, with my shoulder Ah! here’s the naughty kid who is breaking the switch box!
