“The biting was vicious and violent,” he added.

Fabello, who was in court Tuesday, advised the Crown’s office that the relationship is over.

Shakeshaft, who pleaded guilty to one count of assault causing bodily harm in connection with the incident that occurred on April 20 and 21, 2011, was given two months’ credit for the 58 days he spent in the Barton Street detention centre. Culver handed him another six months and placed him on probation for two years.

The accused has an extensive criminal record that includes two previous convictions for violence.

Defence counsel Stephen DeWetter said his client was raised by his grandparents, has mainly an elementary school education and no real job history of note.

“What he has had is a long-standing drug addiction,” he said, adding his client is remorseful for the attack, which occurred as a result of a drug relapse.

Vincelli admitted the victim, who described herself as “a vulnerable individual” in her victim impact statement, clearly wanted to avoid the ordeal of testifying in court.

“This was a prolonged beating over two days that resulted in severe injuries on an intimate partner,” Culver said, noting the victim had to be treated for cellulitis as a result of the bite.
