Hillside Teachers, Staff Model Fitness For Students with Intense Workout Program
Some of the faculty and staff at Hillside Middle School are working up quite a sweat.
It has nothing to do with grading papers or teaching, though. The group of about 20, who come from all age and fitness levels, have been gathering twice a week since about February outside of school hours to get physically healthy. Together.
It all started with physical education teacher Brett Pedersen , who is also a health and wellness professional. He has, according to his website, a Bachelor of Science in physical education and Master of Science in health education. So, he was used to getting questions about how to maximize workouts and lose weight from the adults in the building. Some of his colleagues even offered to pay him for personal training.
Then it occurred to him: he could hold a free exercise class for those interested.
“After the first day we did it, the next day we couldn’t walk,” joked guidance counselor Mary Daar.
“Mary was not nice to me that day,” Pedersen said, laughing.
The idea took off and so did the inches and pounds of the teacher and staff participants. Pedersen uses a method of what is called high intensity interval training in which a person pushes through 30 intense seconds of exercise followed by 30 seconds of rest. Over half an hour, from running up and down bleachers to pulling ropes on the cafeteria ramp, the effects produce visible results.
Daar said that she and the group are grateful to Pedersen, who does the training alongside the group.
“He makes it very safe and respectful,” she said. “It’s very non-threatening.”
And that’s what Pedersen intended.
“I want them to know they can come in and they’re not going to be judged,” he said. “The point of the whole workout program is to improve your own personal health.”
Daar added, “Brett has a different approach. A lot of his personal time is invested in this.”
The most rewarding part for Pedersen is “hearing people tell me their stories and how it’s improving and changing their life.”
To keep up their training over the summer, Pedersen has a website open to all with sample workouts. Daar said she finds it helpful to keep up with the routine at home.
The visibility of the group, as they workout around the school, has had an interesting effect on students, Daar and Pedersen said. Hillside had an improvement goal to promote health and wellness. Pedersen said he wanted that goal to extend beyond the classroom.

I like to use the cardboard the poster mentioned, but I will glue and nail the real sand and sprinkle the glitter of gold may be more of them. This would make the pyramids look more realistic. I Giza pyramids for a project once and built them into a cardboard box, cardboard palms and camels around them. I also used sand the ground. I painted the silver sticker on the inside and used black star, hung a battery and light back in front, where there was a sight to see the pyramids. It made it look like overnight. I shine in most everything, which intensified the dimensions. It was very cool. I hope you have fun with the "International Fair" and that his project is a success!
