Rock, hard work and hard places
It’s not just the ubiquitous training shoes that make Bill Roedy feel “like Forrest Gump”. The former head of MTV Networks International has a pair for every occasion – he even wore them to address the UN. Instead, it is because both he and the fictional character played by Tom Hanks in the eponymous film have accidentally popped up at many of the late 20th century’s historic events. In his memoir, What Makes Business Rock , Mr Roedy describes being present at the fall of the Berlin Wall, discussions with Lithuania’s president Vytautas Landsbergis as the Russian tanks roll in, as well as his encounters with scores of state leaders including Fidel Castro (several times) and Nelson Mandela. He has also dealt with musicians with outsize egos, including intervening in a spat between pop star Christina Aguilera and Kelly Osbourne, daughter of rocker Ozzy.
The Harvard Business School -educated American is not, however, suggesting that he is simple-minded like Gump – though some may question why he devoted so much grey matter to bringing the likes of Beavis and Butt-Head to Russia or Pimp My Vespa to Italy.
