Man charged with robbing store, again

A Garden City man has been charged with armed robbery and being a habitual offender for an incident at a local convenience store.

Paul Bryan Shelton, 42, stood mute and a not guilty plea was entered at his arraignment before 21st District Court Judge Richard Hammer. A preliminary examination has been scheduled for Monday, June 27. He faces up to life in prison if convicted for robbing the store — a business he had been charged with robbing in 2006.

“He was taken into custody without incident June 20,” said Garden City Police Chief Robert Muery.

An employee at 7-Eleven on Ford at Harrison contacted police about 4 a.m. June 17 after she was robbed.

After the clerk told a customer that beer wasn't available, he brought up a bottle of pop, chips and a Danish and laid them on the counter.

As she began to ring up the items, the clerk said the customer told her to turn around because it was a “stick-up” and he demanded cash. She said he pointed what she thought was a handgun from underneath his shirt.

The man ordered her to her knees and told her to count to 10. As she finished counting, she said she heard the front door open and the man fled out the door, then got into an older model Ford Escape.

When the police reviewed the video, they said that the man wore no gloves and the gun he showed was actually his hand under his shirt.

The suspect was described as a white man in his mid- to late 40s, about 5-foot-7, 150-170 pounds, thin build, with short, graying hair. He wore a faded baseball cap and a shirt with “Michigan” written on the front with blue lettering.

Upon investigation after viewing the video, detectives were able to match the description with a man who robbed the same store in 2006.

The man served time in prison for that offense and was paroled in 2009. Police are not releasing a photo at this time.
