Area fireworks shows ensure that sparks will fly Monday as eyes turn skyward ...

The skies around Portland don't stay calm and clear on the Fourth of July. We do it up right, with pyrotechnics erupting in just about any direction you look. There are plenty of terrific vantage points where you can sit and catch Monday's displays for free (the key is getting there early for prime seating). Or you can shell out a bit to watch the bombs bursting directly overhead. Here's a primer:

Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival: The Blues Fest not only features some of the best sounds of the summer, but the event also boasts the largest fireworks display in the state. Big, loud (the soundtrack is simulcast on KINK-FM 101.9) and filled with colorful blooms and bursts, it's the city's sparkling Independence Day signature.

To see the fireworks up close you'll need to purchase admission to the festival -- a $10 donation plus two cans of nonperishable food for the Oregon Food Bank. But the park is flush with free viewing spots, particularly north of the Hawthorne Bridge, or grab a spot on the Eastbank Esplanade.

Fort Vancouver: The Fort Vancouver National Site logs its 48th Independence Day celebration, which actually begins at 8 a.m. This year, there's live music, a historical fashion show, parade and a visit from Abe Lincoln. It all culminates with the half-hour sky display billed as the biggest fireworks show west of the Mississippi. Tickets get you into the site for a ground-level seat. Spread a blanket and prepare to be dazzled.

Fireworks begin at 10:05 p.m., 612 E. Reserve St., Vancouver; 360-992-1808; $5 advance, $7 at the gate, ages 12 and under free; fortvan.org/pages/fourth-home

Even more: Oaks Amusement Park breaks out the fireworks at 10 p.m. for the Southeast play area's annual Pepsi Fireworks Spectacular. (7805 S.E. Oaks Park Way; 503-233-5777; $2-$5; www.oakspark.com ) And both the Molalla Buckeroo and the St. Paul Rodeo put on fireworks displays each night, from Friday through Monday ( molallabuckeroo.com ; stpaulrodeo.com ). If you're in the area, you're likely to catch some of the sparks.
