The Rite sends mixed messages in the type of film it is trying to be. It is very clear in its message; exorcists are in no way a thing of the past and are very much necessary. Director Mikael Hafstrom dwells on the subject of faith, using O'Donoghue's character as the audience's surrogate. The Rite tends to plant seeds of doubt from the first exorcism. Is this woman truly possessed? There are valid opinions for and against, just like when the exorcism topic is brought up in real life conversation. Hafstrom, who is no stranger to horror as his Stephen King adaptation 1408 showed us, makes clear early on that this is not, in any way, an homage to The Exorcist. Hopkins' character asks early on; “What'd you expect? Spinning heads, pea soup?” This is what gives The Rite a bit of freshness. Unfortunately, this is all for nothing, with the third act turning into a schlocky fright-fest. Colin O'Donoghue fares well enough as the troubled young priest, struggling with his faith (or no faith) but the script is so terrible that even when Hopkins is doing what he does best, the frame of mind is barely above 'boredom'. Hopkins' performance, as usual, is superb. He clearly shows his class above a cast of D-list actors (besides a very minor role from Rutger Hauer).Hafstrom shies away from an over-abundance of special effects, thank God, but the small amount he does use is cheesy and unnecessary. Don't do with CGI what you can do with make-up.

Though super-director James Cameron only gets behind the camera once every few years or so, his technical innovations in filmmaking have influenced countless other films, and he himself lends himself as producer on several of these efforts. One such example is Sanctum, an adventure/thriller about a team of underwater cave divers who become trapped during an exploration of one of the largest and most isolated cave systems. The advanced 3D photography techniques pioneered by Cameron for 2009′s global blockbuster Avatar were used in the filming of Sanctum, and critics were certainly quick to point out not only how beautifully the images in the film were captured, but also how much more effective the 3D effects were than most other films. That said, critics also felt that the pretty views alone weren’t enough to overcome what was ultimately a ham-handed script brought to life by flat, lifeless performances. It might be worth viewing, just to see Cameron’s techniques put to good use, but then again, there’s also Werner Herzog’s Certified Fresh Cave of Forgotten Dreams, which may still be in theaters in some places and would probably be a more satisfying experience..
