Hot spring, normal summer?
National Weather Service forecasters will not say if the predicted trend, which is expected to bring widespread rainfall from Thursday through Sunday, is the beginning of the end of the drought that dates back to late last summer.
"I hesitate to say that this pattern will be for good," meteorologist Scott Carroll of the National Weather Service said Tuesday. But Carroll did say to expect afternoon showers for the next 10 days.
The Climate Prediction Center, which is operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also calls for normal temperatures and rainfall for the next 30 days — above-normal rainfall three months out.
Carroll warned that long-range forecasts can change.
Until the rain starts falling, the County Commission on Tuesday extended a mandatory burning ban, which forbids anyone from conducting backyard burning, building campfires and using fireworks.
It has been so hot that the average high temperature so far in June has been 95.3 degrees in Marion, nearly 5 degrees above normal. The all-time highest average temperature in June was 96.7 degrees in 1977. This spring, which lasted from March 20 through June 20, the average high temperature was 89.8 degrees — 4.4 degrees above normal. During that span, Marion also received 4 inches less rainfall than normal.
Since Sept. 1, Marion County has received only 20 inches of rain — 17.5 inches below normal. June 2010 also was one of the hottest months on record and it was followed by nearly 23 inches of rain last July and August.
The recent rainfall deficit led the Marion County Parks and Recreation to announce that people using county boat ramps may experience limited access due to extremely low water conditions.
On Thursday, a trough is expected to begin pushing the thunderstorm-suppressing high pressure ridge off Florida, bringing unstable weather and above-average chance of rainfall across North Florida.
From Thursday through Sunday, there is at least a 50 percent chance of rain every day, with projected highs in the lower 90s. Friday's afternoon high may not even reach 90 degrees.
Today should be the last day for a while that temperatures approach 100 degrees on a regular basis.
The high pressure, which creates sinking air that keeps the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico sea breezes from colliding to form thunderstorms along the Interstate 75 corridor, has been parked over Florida nearly all spring.
