Fast-track to a sticky wicket
How far is it from London to Sevenoaks? You may never have considered this pressing question but I have recently looked up the answer. About 20 miles from Charing Cross station, according to the town’s website. On my last trip I was starting from Lord’s Cricket Ground in St John’s Wood. The AA Route Planner tells me that if I drove, it would take me one hour and 12 minutes.
I had been invited to dinner near Sevenoaks by my European Girlfriend on the same day as play began between England and Sri Lanka in the Test match at Lord’s. I was already attending this as a guest of the Man who Runs English Cricket, but EG is married to a Man who helps to Run England, so I thought I would try and do both.
The cricket was excellent, and we watched quite a lot of Alastair Cook Running Up and Down for England, although he sadly got out at 96. The guests in the box included a Man who Used to Run England, the Right Honourable Sir John Major, KG, CH. I confess to being a total wimp and not introducing myself. What do you say to a former prime minister?
I could not think of a single subject on which he would not know so much more than me. The closest I got all day was asking him if he would mind standing up to let me walk past and take my seat.
And then we had a really famous gatecrasher to our box, who came to talk to Sir John: Charles Collingwood, who plays Brian in The Archers . I have been an Archers fan since I could turn the dial on the radio, so if I was tongue-tied before, I was totally silenced then.
I knew I had to summon up more courage for conversation with important people, as EG was bound to have stellar dinner guests. So I left the cricket early, at 17.45, and set off for Sevenoaks. In this age of austerity, I went on public transport. Observant Olivia had given me some train times.
I didn’t look at them very closely. I am a modern woman and know where trains to Kent go from in these days of high speed rail – St Pancras. So I caught a bus and a tube and went to the correct platforms. Oops. I had thought myself too clever by half. No train to Sevenoaks – they only go to east Kent. I read the piece of paper properly. It said I should have been at Charing Cross or London Bridge. What now? Get the Underground?
No, I still thought I was very clever: I found a train elsewhere at St Pancras that went across London overground – First Capital Connect. They even had a direct train to Sevenoaks! But it was stopping everywhere and would take 90 minutes. I decided to get an earlier train, go to London Bridge and change.

It's always a good idea to use a route planner to check how long your journey is likely to take. There are free planners online, such as those available on AA.com and VisitBritain.com. A GPS is also recommended. Beyond directing you to your destination
Something I would love to see built would be a line from Tysons to Alexandria, more or less tracing route 7 through Falls Church, 7 corners, Bailey's crossroads, NVCC, etc. Light rail or a trolley along Glebe from Ballston to the Pike would be nice
The Logan County Zoning Board of Appeals on Monday began hearings on aa conditional use permit for Sugar Creek Wind One after the Logan County Regional Planning Commission last week approved the permit. There was standing room only
This makes countries going this route less competitive. It also means they will run into debt to Germany, France and the Netherlands, causing the financial strains that now are leading to showdowns with democratically elected governments.
