I don't know a lot about traditional Chinese scroll paintings (okay, I know absolutely nothing), but the architectural spines of several of the works look just like them. In these imaginary landscapes, there are a bestiary of
I was immediately drawn to Horror Fables because of their excessive gore and cartoon-like images. They reminded me of my own childhood when I collected comic books filled with fantastic characters such as the Silver Surfer , the Fantastic Four , and X-Men . They existed in an imaginary, violent landscapes which I loved. In Horror Fables :, gleeful demons in rivers of blood know nothing of mercy or kindness. They're ruthless and completely unforgiving. When I read that Tsui creates his works using a quasi-automatist process, I wasn't surprised. It's what the Surrealists used it to break into the subconscious. Tsui's images look like they come from a place civilized society likes to keep under wraps.
Horror Fables was originally shown at the Carleton University Art Gallery in 2009.
On opening night back in May, Tsui created a fresco on the wall by the front entrance by bleeding Chinese inks on rice paper. The painted rice paper is still lying in pieces in front of the fresco.
