Middlesboro neighborhoods and coal mine clean muddy mess

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear toured storm damage in Middlesboro and other parts of Bell County on Tuesday.  Beshear declared a state of emergency for Bell and five other counties hit hard by Monday's severe weather.

As floodwaters began to subside, the city of Middlesboro got a clearer view of the damage.  Now the community focuses on the repairs after the storm.

Neighborhoods fight muddy mess

High waters receded to reveal a moonscape of mud for several neighborhoods in Middlesboro.  Water damage also left many residents with limited power and no air conditioning on a sweltering first day of summer.

"I have one outlet in my house that works and I have a fan plugged into it," said Charlotte Saylor-Smith of Middlesboro.  "The fan is just to try to dry out my house.  My dining room has all of the mud on the floor.  It is about four inches deep."

High water marks on Saylor-Smith's furniture demonstrated the depth of Monday's damage.  However, the water lines do not convey the speed at which the flood rushed into the neighborhood.

"My brother went to sleep on the couch.  When he got off the couch he stuck his feet right down into a couple of inches of water.  He was in shock," said Saylor-Smith.  "Just a few minutes earlier there was not any water in the house."

Neighbors brought in heavy equipment to clear enough mud to make the driveways passable.  Now Saylor-Smith and others depend on each other and their faith to clear a road to recovery.

"What you work for your entire life, in 30 minutes it's gone," said Saylor-Smith.  "How do you start over?  I'm so glad we've got our lives and I don't want to be a crybaby.  I told the Lord yesterday, thank you for every drop of rain and I'm trying to be a good soldier and have courage. But I said I'm hurt. My heart is broken.  I'm sure the Lord understands that."

Kentucky officials are urging homeowners to follow health and safety guidelines during the cleanup.  You can find more information at the Kentucky  Health Alerts website.
