Helmet sensors could soon measure NFL's biggest hits
In a laboratory at the Southern Impact Research Center, the NFL uses sensors in helmets and mouth guards to measure hits.
If the currently locked-out league decides the sensors (called accelerometers) are reliable, it plans to try them out on a sample of players in practice and play. That could be expanded in future years to a league-wide collection of hits data with an eye toward new rules, helmet improvements and better protection from concussions.
"The purpose is to find out in real time out on the field, as opposed to in a laboratory like we're doing here, what types of impacts players take," says Kevin Guskiewicz, director of sports-related brain injury research at the University of North Carolina and a member of the NFL's head, neck and spine committee.
Outside the lab, you can hear birds chirp in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains . Inside, testers don ear protectors or cover their ears before each test.
"Fire in the hole!" test engineer Elizabeth McCalley warns before triggering each loud impact from a control panel.
Here's how it works:
•Blows on the helmets are delivered at varying speeds and angles by a machine powered by compressed air. It launches a ramrod with a hard plastic head curved like a helmet.
•The helmets are mounted on a Hybrid III headform. More than just a dummy, it contains sensors that transmit data to a computer. It has a movable jaw for testing of the mouth-guard sensors. The metal headform is covered with a urethane rubber mold of a human head and face. It is then covered with a nylon stocking to simulate how the helmet rubs against hair.
•The helmets being used are the Riddell Revolution and the Riddell Revolution Speed. Both contain Riddell's Head Impact Telemetry System (HITS). Its sensors send wireless data to a computer via radio frequencies.
•The mouth guard, with its own sensor system, is the X2IMPACT.
•Sensor readings from the headform, helmets and mouth pieces are measured independently. The NFL will analyze how well the sensors in the helmets and mouth guards correlate to what Guskiewicz calls the "gold standard" of the headform readings.
