Titans outlook: Team has too many issues to contend for playoffs
The organization hopes that won’t be the only big change moving forward. Coming off a 6-10 season, everyone in Nashville would like to sing a different tune after several disappointing seasons. Right now, however, there are few reasons to be optimistic.
Munchak will be working with a roster full of question marks, especially at the quarterback position, although one big answer was provided when the team used its first-round pick on Washington’s Jake Locker.
The coach also has surrounded himself with a revamped coaching staff, including new coordinators on both sides of the ball. Most figure it’s going to take some time for Munchak to implement his system and get positive results.
Munchak, however, says he expects to win now. “Our team, it is not rebuilding,” Munchak said. “We are not sitting here saying because we have a new head coach, or because we were 6-10 last year we are expecting this to be an off year. We are expecting good things. … We are going to bring excitement back on Sunday afternoon and our goal is obviously to win, and win now.”
What's newOffense: Mike Heimerdinger is out and Chris Palmer is in at offensive coordinator. Palmer will have his work cut out for him, as the Titans aren’t sure who will play quarterback this fall. Locker will be in the mix, but he’ll be competing with a veteran. The Titans know for sure Vince Young won’t be in the mix, as the team plans to trade him or release him after the lockout. Palmer is expected to lean on the running game, but he is also known to take chances downfield. Locker is the future, but how quickly he plays remains to be seen. Even after the draft, the team made plans to add a veteran quarterback to the fold. The extended lockout has improved the chances of free agent Kerry Collins returning. No one knows the offense better and could be a quick fix like Collins.
In Kenny Britt, the Titans have a receiver capable of being a superstar, or a disappointing bust. Off-field issues have plagued Britt, and a series of problems this offseason could lead to a suspension. That would be a big setback for the offense.
Defense: Jerry Gray, who replaced Chuck Cecil as coordinator, is expected to bring a more aggressive approach to the table. Look for Gray to lean on his cornerbacks in man coverage and use extra blitzers more often than Cecil did.
The success of the line under new line coach Tracy Rocker largely will depend on who returns. End Jason Babin racked up 12.5 sacks in 2010 and was named to the Pro Bowl, but he is a free agent. One guy who will be counted on to step up regardless is end Derrick Morgan, a first-round pick last year who missed the last 12 games with a torn ACL.
