Doctor Venture, washed-up super-scientist and former boy-adventurer, suffers a stroke during an attack from his archenemy, The Monarch’s, henchmen.  After his sons, Hank and Dean, and their bodyguard Sgt. Hatred carry him to safety, they must shrink down and enter his body to fix his ailment, led by former bodyguard, and world’s greatest bad-ass Brock Samson.  Meanwhile, the Monarch’s new love-affair with his Green Goblin-esque “Butter-Glider” distracts him from work and forces his wife to take drastic actions.

This episode strikes an amazing balance between all the things that make the Venture Bros. a great show.  Equal parts action, comedy and “behind the scenes” moments in the lives of a group of comic book super-folks moves this series beyond simple parody, giving the world and it’s characters a fullness many other shows lack.

Being that this is the fifth season (or the second half of the fourth season, which aired a year ago) the Venture Bros has built up a lot of continuity.  And as often happens with shows like Futurama, sometimes the urge to play off that continuity or reveal a new chunk can overtake the drive for storytelling and comedy.  Luckily, there’s not much of that here, and this episode would be easily accessible for any newly interested fan.

Although we don’t actually hear from Dr Venture in this episode, it is good to see that perennial favorite Brock Samson has returned, although he’s still a member of SPHINX, the covert ops group that’s renting space on the Venture Compound.  As you might expect, this bugs Sgt Hatred.

Continuing the previous season’s attempt at “growing” the characters, both Hank and Dean prove fairly useful throughout the episode, especially during the chase scene in the opening.  Henchman 24 also exhibits character development, actually leading the attack all by himself while the Monarchs attend a social function.

And Dr Mrs The Monarch gets a chance to show just how ruthless she is as she plays all the characters against each other just to get the Monarch to stop playing with his new toy.

All in all, this was a great first episode.  From Billy and White to dead Venture Clones, we got everything a fan could want in an opening episode.
