Chamber welcomes new directors;

Members of the French Lick-West Baden Chamber held their annual meeting on June 13 at French Lick Resort, and, during the business portion of the evening, elected three new directors. Chosen were Richard Knowles of Northwest Mutual Insurance, Steve Stewart of Big Splash Adventure and Sandy Woodward of Indiana Landmarks. The new directors will replace Dr. Suzanne Bates, Carolyn Fuhs and Terry Pinnick. The next speaker, Jerry Fuhs of Valley of the Springs, enlightened the audience on his company’s plans to break ground soon on a new family fun center. The project, which will be located on the Boulevard just down the hill from his Big Splash Adventure Indoor Water Park, will combine an outdoor miniature golf course with an 8,300-square-foot indoor neon miniature golf course and laser tag facility. “I’m certainly hoping that they [the students] will be able to go and learn a lot of the important things that may help their community,” Barnett said. “We certainly hope that, with what’s going on in our economy now, that they’ll be reasons for many of these young folks to gain their education, come back to our community and help us make our community a better place to live.

How do you explain Biarritz ? Wild, beautiful, unruly, Spanish cool, French hip. Sporty, arty, relaxed, mellow. The little town in southwest France, on the Bay of Biscay, fifteen miles from the border of Spain, with its rocky shore and climate was once the reigning vacation spot for Europe’s rulers but now it is the capital of surfing cool. So easy to get to with cheap tickets to Paris so easy to find and connecting flights on both Ryannair and Air France, this is now the coolest place to hit this summer.

People come from all over Europe just to catch one of the waves that when looking at them, you feel as if you could be in Malibu or Hawaii, but with half naked girls in front of you. Not bad, huh? And the vibe here is everything from beautiful women working on their tans in Pucci suits  to drop-out surfers in frayed flip-flops. Here you will hear and feel the mix of Spanish, French and Basque in the language, the food and the down-to-earth elegance of the place.

Where to stay? Depends on how much you want to spend, of course. There’s the Hôtel du Palais, the most luxurious of hotels. This hotel with its 152-rooms along the Grande Plage was the palace of Napoleon III’s Spanish-born wife, Eugénie. Inside there is a treasure trove of pampering from a spa to a private pool and miniature golf course. A double room with a sea view costs 570 euros, or about $870 at $1.53 to the euro, during the high season.

On the other side of the spectrum is La Maison du Lierre:

Where rooms start at around 75 euros. This beautiful bed-and-breakfast is five minutes from the beach and has been lovingly restored with hardwood floors and antique brass fittings. Breakfast is served on tables in the hotel’s small garden. And who needs a spa and private pool when we came for the sea?!

Yes, the biggest star here is not the hotel spa, but the surf. It’s pretty remarkable to see such waves in an old French town. Especially after you’ve been to St. Tropez where the sea has a bath tub feel to it. The Grande Plage is the place to grab and ice-cream and watch beautiful people watch as surfers take to the massive waves. Farther down the beach, the crowd splits between chic-looking families frolicking in the water, and wealthy 50-year-olds enjoying their early retirement.

But Biarrtiz is an active town that attracts active people.
