Family loses travel trailer, livelihood in fire

Luis Gonzales and wife Ilrlanda Alvarez awoke early Thursday morning to find that their travel trailer was the possible target of a serial arsonist.

"When the sheriff's officer knocked on the door, we were scared," Gonzales said.

The couple was alerted that a travel trailer that was about 50 yards from their house - on the 100 block of Jenny Lane - was in flames around 3:30 a.m., Guadalupe County Fire Marshal Kelly Kistner said.

"It took Sand Hills Volunteer Fire Department with the assistance of County Line Volunteer Fire Department about an hour to put the fire out," he said.

Gonzales said the trailer was used to house all of his equipment, as well as many personal belongings of his family.

"It's all gone. We had everything, clothes, Christmas decorations," he said. "All of my tools - construction, framing, mechanical - everything is gone."

What makes the fire even more devastating for the family is that Gonzales makes a living using those items that were destroyed, Kistner said.

"It has put the husband out of work and created a real hardship for the family," he said.

"All of my tools are gone," Gonzales said. "I'm sad because I have to start again."

The homeowner said he has also been working on remodeling the kitchen in his current house and kept the new appliances in the trailer.

"We had a new microwave and other kitchen things in there," he said.

The fire's damage effected more than just Gonzales and Alvarez.

"My 4-year-old son woke up and said ‘our little house is on fire, what about my big toy box?" he said. "My son is scared. We are all scared that somebody would do this."

Gonzales said he took measures to ensure his family's safety.

"I close my gate every night to keep my family protected," he said. "I put up a fence and this still happens."

This is the seventh fire in the Park Creek subdivision since November, and Gonzales can't believe that it continues to happen.

"Why? We are good people," he said. "I don't have any problems with anybody. I don't know why."

The fire appears suspicious and is being investigated as an arson, Kistner said.

"There was no electricity to the travel trailer and smoking was eliminated because nobody on the property smokes," he said.

The blaze has comparable traits to the previous fires in the area, Kistner said.

This is the seventh fire in a series that has been plaguing the neighborhood - five residences, one vehicle and now the travel trailer.
