Lon Morris budget issues

Now, two teachers say their contracts are not being renewed. One anonymous man tells us when he moved from another state to take a job there, he didn't know how financially unstable the college was. He says he soon learned about a $2 million budget shortfall the college was facing.

Some teachers say they received letters in the mail stating their contracts were not going to be renewed.

Lon Morris President Dr. Miles McCall says there are no layoffs.  He says the teachers may have been cut because of poor performance. Dr. McCall also says they are doing everything they can to prevent layoffs, including raising tuition.

HOUMA — The coaches at Lon Morris College, a Texas junior college, like Tamitris Bryant’s style.

Her style on the court, but more importantly, her style off it.

The school promotes a Christian lifestyle, and its women’s basketball team plays a up-tempo game. Bryant will fit in well.

Bryant, a 5-foot-6 guard from Terrebonne, signed with Lon Morris, located in Jacksonville, Texas, this week.

“I’ve been playing for like 13 years, and this is something I have always wanted to do,” Bryant said. “It’s always been my dream to play college ball. Now I have to work even harder.”

Lon Morris coaches started looking for Bryant at H.L. Bourgeois when she was a sophomore. They saw tape on her with the Lady Braves, but she transferred to Terrebonne after he sophomore season in Gray.

“They saw me at (H.L. Bourgeois) and thought I was still over there,” Bryant said. “One of the (H.L. Bourgeois) coaches told one of the players, who is one of my friends, and she told me. Then I went take a visit.”

Lon Morris, a two-year school and the junior college Region 14 runner-up last season, was more impressed with Bryant at a tryout. “She had a workout for them midseason, and the assistant coach, the recruiting coach, really liked what they saw in her,” Terrebonne coach Gus Brown said. “The type of ball they play, they get up and down the floor, and we do the same thing. It won’t be too much of a tough transition for her.”

Versatility is one of the keys to Bryant’s game. She helped lead Terrebonne to a 16-10 record and a share of the District 8-5A title this season. The Lady Tigers fell to Dutchtown, 62-54, in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.

“She’s multitalented,” Brown said. “She can dribble, shoot, rebound, get her own shot, she can run up and down the floor, she can defend. She can do all three phases of the game. She is an all-around player, and that’s the type of players they are looking for.”

Bryant, a second-team all-district player, is also a talented track-and-field athlete. She participates in the triple jump, the long jump and the high jump and also competes in relay events and was the Field Most Valuable Player at the Terrebonne Parish Relays on March 22.

She’s also a very good student.

Brown said Lon Morris and Bryant are a great match.
