Boerne saves another $1.3 million on WWTRC

Boerne City Council approved a change order that will cut $1.3 million from the cost of building the new waste water treatment and recycling center on Old San Antonio Road. The action taken Tuesday night at the regular meeting of the council will result in a total cost of $26.8 million to build the center. The City previously awarded the construction contract to Archer Western Construction for $31.4 million with direction for city staff to execute some value engineering changes that resulted in a reduction of the total cost to $28.1 million. The change order authorized Tuesday night will modify the filtration system planned for the center. Rather than using gravity filters, cloth media disk filters will be used, offering significant up-front cost savings according to city Public Works Director Michael Mann. Construction of the center will take 548 days to become operational.

In addition to the change order, city council approved a contract with Raba Kistner Consultants to conduct construction material testing at the new treatment and recycling facility as part of the construction inspection process. The estimated cost of the testing is $172,149. The city received several proposals that met the qualifications stipulated, narrowing the list to two before selecting Raba Kistner. Mann put the agreement in perspective by noting that the center is the largest project in the history of Boerne and the construction contract requires the testing to ensure it's built according to specification.

Blanco-Esser Rd. intersection moves forward

The realignment of the Blanco - Esser Road intersection took another step forward when city council approved a contract with Saur Construction to combine Bentwood Drive and the adjacent Boerne High School driveway prior to work planned by TxDOT to begin in the fall. The Bentwood/BHS project will cost $409,960. The city is paying 75 percent of the cost and the Boerne ISD will fund the remaining 25 percent. The project is expected to be completed around the time the new school year starts. Saur Construction was the low bidder, coming in significantly less than the $459,000 engineers' estimate. The city used Saur Construction to widen a portion of Bentwood a few years ago. Along with the realignment of the intersection, TxDOT will be adding a traffic signal.

Kendall Appraisal District dedicates new offices - San Antonio ...

BOERNE — Four months after employees moved in, the Kendall Appraisal District on Wednesday dedicated its new headquarters off U.S. 87 on the north side of town.

“We love it,” Chief Appraiser Gary Eldridge said of the 5,000-square-foot structure, which was built with proceeds of the $750,000 sale of its old quarters, at 121 So. Main St., to the Greater Boerne Area Chamber of Commerce.

He said the new building's layout has improved the workflow by his staff, who each now have their own office, and that parking is abundant around the new site at 118 Market Ave.

The old appraisal district offices will be renovated before the chamber officials move in this summer. For now it's renting its former building, at 126 Rosewood Ave., which was sold last year to Kendall County for $280,000.
