Your views: Will things improve for the SPL?

After a troubled Scottish Premier League season last year Newsbeat's Nick Beake went to Glasgow to see whether fans are optimistic that things will change for the new season.

Few sporting rivalries are as intense as the one shared by Glasgow's footballing giants Rangers and Celtic.

But almost everyone agrees last season it went too far. And not just at that one game.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon received death threats, had bombs sent to him in the post, and was attacked by a spectator who got onto the pitch during a game against Hearts.

So the Scottish Government says it's doing all it can to tackle sectarianism as the new season gets underway this weekend.

In other words, it wants to tackle hatred and bigotry towards people from a different political or religious background.

Traditionally Protestants have supported Rangers while Catholics have followed Celtic.

A new police unit's been set up to try to stop fans singing sectarian songs. Many people find the words and messages deeply offensive.

Ministers in Scotland also put forward new powers which would see people going to prison for up to five years for abusive behaviour.

That's whether they were watching a match in the stadium, in the pub or writing offensive comments on a social networking site, like Myspace or Facebook.

But the government failed to introduce the powers in time for the new season after accusations they hadn't been probably thought through.

Sammy is 18 and is waiting for her exam results this summer. Her family all support Rangers.

She says the violence last year detracted from the football, but thinks much of the rivalry among fans doesn't go too far.

"They're trying to ban certain songs, but I don't think it's going to stop people singing them," she said.

"If people want to sing songs, they'll sing them. Some are offensive to some people, but as long as it's not violent, there's no harm in them. It's just banter."

Chris fits air conditioning and is a Celtic fan.

He says the media is responsible for whipping up bad feeling among the teams, but is depressed by the state of the game in Scotland.
