That’s short of the spike past 30 in mid-March over fears of a potential meltdown of the Japanese nuclear plant following the earthquake and tsunami.
Historically, a VIX of 20 suggests relative calm in the markets. Whether those benchmarks have the same meaning is open to question. How much are vols artificially suppressed by options-selling strategies to generate income in a yield-parched market? Something to ponder.
