The NBA lockout is no great catastrophe
I was pretty convinced life as we know it was going to end at midnight. If you haven’t been hoarding bottled water and Dirk Nowitzki DVDs, you probably didn’t even realize the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement expired at that moment.
Basketball has officially joined football in lockout mode. With luck, soccer and synchronized swimming will soon join them.
I don’t mean to minimize the greatness of all those endeavors, but the only one powerful enough to alter solar activity is the NFL. If America doesn’t get its fix, the entire nation might act like Vancouver after a Stanley Cup loss.
Most of the country pays little attention to the NBA until the Super Bowl is over. But those who are emotionally and financially invested in it think the apocalypse has arrived.
“A lockout will cause tremendous damage to our game,” said Derek Fisher, president of players union.
“The abyss,” NBA Commissioner David Stern called it.
As midnight approached, owners offered players Wal-Mart gift certificates. The union said it would ask Ron Artest to change his name from World Metta Peace to Labor Metta Peace.
Nothing worked. The go-to word is now “catastrophic.” It is traditionally defined as “a momentous tragic event ranging from extreme misfortune to utter overthrow or ruin.”
Magic Johnson getting a talk show. That was catastrophic. A comet hitting Earth and ending the Dinosaur Era – catastrophic. The Jazz-Timberwolves game on Nov. 12 getting cancelled? Not catastrophic.
That doesn’t mean there won’t be fallout.
Thanks to a must-see NBA Finals, America’s national pastime became making fun of LeBron James. Cleveland was already planning for the Heat’s first visit, where owner Dan Gilbert would present James with a miniature jersey in honor of his fourth-quarter performances.
Sacramento was hyped for Jimmer-mania. Fantasy geeks and NBA media are sweating. Eddy Curry is wondering where his next Happy Meal is coming from.
But beyond those special-interest groups, this is like Greg Oden falling in the woods. It’s not that nobody hears it. It’s that most people just don’t care.
And I’m saying that as a guy who’d watch the Jazz-T-wolves on Nov. 12. Even in the most meaningless game you can see the most amazing physical feats.
For entertainment value, give me Kevin Durant any night of the year. But the fact is most people don’t feel that way.

Comet showing 3D Wimbledon in store with the help of Amy Childs ...
Wimbledon coverage is being broadcast in 3D for the very first time this weekend and Comet is showing the matches live in some of its stores for those who don’t own a 3D TV…. yet.
And to highlight the fact, the retailer employed the talents of The Only Way is Essex star Amy Childs, who claims to love the sport as she was a ping pong champion at the age of 13.
The matches mark the BBC’s first foray into 3D broadcasting, and will be shown in participating Comet stores nationwide on Sony 3D Bravia sets, which customers can all huddle around. Although, as active rather than passive screens, Pocket-lint wonders whether there’ll be enough glasses to go around if Andy Murray makes it through to Sunday’s final.
That won’t bother Childs though, she’s a fan of 3D tennis no matter the players involved: “I love Wimbledon and on the 3D TV it feels like you are actually there – the ball really comes out at you.”
