Combine season comes to Texas County
Certain times of year mean different things to different people.
The calendar year not only covers the four climatic seasons, but also includes several other shorter seasons during which folks around the Ozarks partake in activities or perform tasks that they aren't involved in the rest of the year.
Fall might mean it's time to get out the rifles, bows and other deer hunting gear. Early spring might inspire a search of forested areas and bottomlands for edible mushrooms.
For a number of people within the agricultural community, the beginning of summer has a recurring meaning. That's when the fescue grass on the hills and in the fields has grown tall and its seed is ready for harvest.
That means it's combine season.
Thousands of tons of fescue seed is harvested each year in the United States for use in growing more fescue in lawns, pastures and fields around the world. Thanks to some pretty decent prices paid for that seed, fescue is a definite cash crop for many Texas County landowners.
One of those landowners is Darren Ice, whose family - like so many in the area - has been involved in the local agricultural scene for generations. Ice owns about 900 acres east of Houston, and has a fleet of five combines that sits idle for the better part of 11 months each year. But when the time is right, the steel giants come alive and prowl the land like a bunch of ravenous bears awakened from hibernation.
The combine harvester, or simply combine, is a machine invented in the United States in 1834 that combines into a single process three different operations involved in harvesting grain crops - reaping, threshing and winnowing. Early versions were pulled by horse or mule teams, and by 1860, combine harvesters with a cutting width of several yards were being used on American farms.
Steam-powered engines were eventually incorporated, and the first self-propelled combine harvester was developed in 1911 by a manufacturing company in California.
Years ago, rudimentary open-cab designs left combine operators at the mercy of outdoor conditions. Technology has since led to the production of highly advanced machines, many of which now feature air-tight cabs equipped with luxurious seats and outfitted with elaborate audio and climate control systems.
But getting the job done doesn't require luxury or added options, and Ice's collection of steel workhorses is a prime example. His combines are all closer to vintage models than new: four Allis-Chalmers Gleaner units (a G, a K and an F model from the 1960s and an F2 from the 80s), and a John Deere 6600 (circa early 1970s).
