Serendipity Dance Club raises funds for new fine arts project

In years past, the funds generated were used to support the Callan Concert Association and the Gadsden Symphony Orchestra with goods and services.

In 1998, “The Serendipity Stage,” complete with sound system, was built in the courtyard of the Hardin Center. The club commissioned artist Steve Temple to paint trompe l’oeil murals on the wall in the courtyard. A plaque is placed there to recognize Serendipity as the donor. Rob Johnston, artist in residence, completed another wall of the trompe l’oeil project in 2004.

In 2006, gas lanterns and planters were placed in the courtyard as well as signs and a lantern at the Broad Street entrance. Artist Joseph Giri, commissioned by Serendipity, completed a jazz mural on the wall by the train caboose at the Hardin Center.

The proceeds from 2007 were used to purchase a bronze sculpture of two children sitting on a bench reading a book in honor of Gadsden Reads. It sits it in a prominent place year round. It currently resides in the courtyard under the magnolia tree.

In 2009, Mario Gallardo was commissioned to complete the final wall. In addition, support was given for the iron balcony and wooden shutters.

A new art project is in the planning stages. Contributions will go into a fine arts fund for future ventures.

Young adults recently honored at the dance were:

• Marian Elizabeth Acee is the daughter of Dr. Wesley W. Acee III and Elizabeth Legg Ford. She attends the University of Alabama, where she is pursuing a double major in art history and restaurant hospitality management with a concentration in event coordinating and wedding planning. Her social sorority is Kappa Delta. Her activities include Hotel and Restaurant and Convention Association and Study Abroad Connections. She studied art history abroad at Centro Linguistico Italiano Dante Alighieri in Florence, Italy, during the summer of 2009. She interned at the Orange Beach Art Center, where she taught art classes and helped direct summer camps.

• Lucy Isabel Bennett is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Ervin Bennett. She graduated in May from the University of Alabama with a bachelor of arts degree with a major in economics and a minor in art history. She served as a mentor at Holt Elementary School as part of the Honors College Mentoring Program. In her junior and senior years, she received the Faculty Excellence Award in Economics. Last summer, she studied art history in Florence and Rome through the UA Study Abroad Program. She is a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She is employed by the Cultural Alliance in arts administration.
