Spark up the weekend

» The Fish Creek Civic Association celebrates its Fish Creek Summer Festival Saturday at Clark Park with games and food starting at noon and live music by the Blue Rays from noon to 3 p.m. and Big Mouth and the Power Tool Horns from 6 to 10, followed by fireworks over the bay at 10. The games include raffles, minnow races, a three-legged sack race and an egg toss.

New this year is a hot dog eating contest at 4 p.m. Entry fee is $20, with $100 and a trophy going to the person who can mow down the most weiners in 10 minutes; prizes to second and third places, too.

» Egg Harbor's Independence Day celebration, presented by the Egg Harbor Business Association, takes advantage of the three-day weekend with events from Saturday through Monday, highlighted by one of the area's best fireworks shows Sunday.

The fun begins Saturday with food, refreshments and inflatable games for the kids from 1 to 5 p.m. at Wisconsin 42 and Orchard Road. Live music will be all over the area, with a free family concert at Birch Creek Music Performance Center, three miles east on County E, from 1 to 3 p.m.; funk-jazz band Ifdakar at Harbor View Park from 3 to 5 p.m.; and the Saline Fiddlers youth show group at the Peg Egan Performing Arts Center in Eames Cherry View Park on Church Street at 7 p.m.

Sunday has more food and games starting at 11 a.m., with music in Harbor View Park from the Mango Brothers from 1 to 3 p.m. and Big Mouth and the Power Tool Horns from 5 to 9. Then at dusk, the fireworks go off over the harbor. Monday sees the traditional parade at 1:30 p.m. through downtown Egg Harbor.

» The Baileys Harbor Community Association plans a full day of events with "Hats Off for Our Heroes" Monday, featuring the 10 a.m. parade with more than 100 entries heading north through the community on Wisconsin 57, then west on County F/EE, including a Wells Fargo stagecoach.

Another highlight is the annual serving of strawberry shortcake by the Baileys Harbor Women's Club, starting at 9 a.m. in the town hall and running until the berries are gone. Outside the hall is an arts and crafts fair with almost 100 artists showing their wares.

One can break the fast with a pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the fire station, on Park Road, or with cinnamon and pecan rolls and coffee while supplies last, starting at 7:30 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Later in the day, a food court will serve burgers, brats, hot dogs, corn, beer and more.
