A passion for recruiting
It has been said, and rightfully so, that recruiting is the lifeblood of every college football program.
That being the case, high school football is the vein that provides that lifeblood and first-year Crestview football coach and athletic director Kevin Pettis wants to make sure college coaches know they can get a healthy transfusion from his program.
“There are 859 colleges that play college football,” he said. “My job is to get every one of my seniors a chance to go play football.
“I get more joy from that than anything I do. I love to watch those kids go out and play. Here’s the way I look at it, if you want to play college football, there is a place for everyone to end up playing.”
The task of placing players with college programs is a little coaching, a little marketing and a lot of hard work.
Bob Kellogg has spent more than 35 years coaching high school football in Northwest Florida and he said he’s never seen anything like the system Pettis has in place.
“When you see his system, it is unbelievable,” Kellogg said. “When you see his contacts and what he puts out on kids. He said that it’s all about marketing kids more than them (college coaches) finding the kids.
“In this part of the state we always think they will find them, but they won’t find them. That’s where we’ve missed the boat when the Internet and all that came out. He’s doing a great service to them and it saves them (college coaches) time. I’ve never seen so many guys in my life.”
Pettis has countless contacts with coaching staffs from across the country and those contacts are already paying off.
“We had 71 schools through here (during the spring evaluation period) and that was pretty neat watching our kids react to it,” he said. “We had all three big state schools (Florida, Florida State and Miami) here. I had every school in the state of Florida came through here.”
Most of the schools from the Atlantic Coast Conference dropped by and every school from the Southeastern Conference but Vanderbilt was on campus.
Despite the fact that Crestview sits on Interstate 10 and that countless thousands of people come through town on their way to the beach each year, it still wasn’t easy for Pettis to get the recruiters to Crestview.

Boise State returns Kellen Moore for one more go-around, but will have to replace departed wide receivers Austin Pettis and Titus Young. With the new receivers well-adjusted though, the Broncos should have no problems scoring in this game.

Losing top receivers Austin Pettis and Titus Young will be difficult to overcome, but fantastic quarterback Kellen Moore is incredibly adept at spreading the ball around, which should allow some new stars to emerge on offense.

On the other side of the field, the Boise State Broncos will have senior QB Kellen Moore at the helm, minus star receivers Titus Young and Austin Pettis. Given the nature of coach Chris Peterson's goofy offense, the Broncos should have no problems
