MICHELE'S ADVICE: Coming Out of a Heterosexual Marriage

"Coming out" is a challenging process, whether you are 15, 21, or 50. The first step toward coming out is self-awareness, or recognition that you have feelings of attraction for persons of the same sex. This awareness may lead to confusion, attempts to deny or repress feelings of attraction, anxiety about unwanted feelings, or even attempts to “pass” as heterosexual. It is no secret that there are a lot of social stigmas and negative feelings about being gay. As a result, some people delay, deny, avoid, and reject having any awareness of feelings of attraction for persons of the same sex. Sometimes these attractions are repressed deeply enough to be out of one’s conscious awareness altogether.

In this state of denial (which can be either conscious or unconscious), men and women sometimes pursue heterosexual relationships. Some men and women experience many years of heterosexual relationships that might even include marriage and children. Sometimes, though, these men and women, for various reasons, begin to develop a greater self-awareness. This awareness might be triggered by things such as an undeniable attraction to someone of the same sex, a function of maturity and greater self-exploration, or a sense of emptiness or longing that stems from having emotional needs that have not been met by their heterosexual relationships because of their same-sex attractions.

If you are in this position and are starting to explore or allowing yourself to become aware of attractions you have long denied, this can be a painful experience. Coming out to yourself and others is complicated when you experience it in the context of a committed heterosexual relationship. It is important, however, to know that you are not the only one experiencing this. There are many others like you. The following suggestions offer some guidance about how to embark on this journey toward a greater understanding of your feelings and your authentic sexual orientation. 4.  Acknowledge to your spouse that you’re struggling with some confusing feelings. If you are in a relationship, acknowledge to him or her that you are struggling to understand some things about yourself that are confusing and that they are about you, not him or her. Explain that when you feel ready, you will share what you are experiencing with him or her.

Understanding How Important Emotion in Your Life | Addiction and ...

Emotion is something abstract that nobody understands. Many studies have been conducted in this field, and yet still no one can describe the emotion as something clear. People begin to study about emotion decades ago, when they aware that emotion is very vital for the human life. The scientists study emotion in hopes that the result will be valuable for emotion control of humans. The word emotion itself comes from two separate words. The first is “e” that stands for “energy” and the “motion” which means movement.

What the term tries to say is that the emotion moves you from your steady state to response incoming stimuli. One of the examples of stimuli is a threat that will induce an emotion response which is to defend. Emotion also moves us to social attachments and procreation, causing us to engage in pleasurable pursuits, brings us to reattachment after some meaningful loss, and leads us to understand better our surrounding. After all, without emotion our life would be at a standstill.

Experts have a term for people who have decreased or lack of emotion. The term is alexithymia. Emotion here is including anger or temper. People with alexithymia have unique characteristics. They have difficulty identifying and understanding certain types of feeling. They don’t know how to react properly to certain stimulus. In social community, people with alexithymia have difficulty incorporating into others. They will attract themselves and appear stiff and wooden in relation to others. They also have decreased emotional awareness. This can lead to many problems in their life, including the life-saving mechanisms that normally run together with the emotion’s response to danger.

These people are having difficulty enjoying something too, because it does not make any difference to them whether they are eating nice expensive food or just some cheap canned food. People with alexithymia also have trouble differentiating emotions and bodily feelings.

One main feature of these people is they appear too logical when it comes to decision making. Their minds are so rational that they don’t want to count humanly aspect of problems. This will often result in difficulty working together with teammate, as their thinking pattern is too rational and unbreakable.

From the above explanation, we should be grateful to have normal emotions. Anger is also normal emotion, but an anger that goes way too much is not a good thing. It is needed to be controlled, and anger management is your answer.
